A Glimpse Inside the Closet – Photography Exhibition for World Mental Health Day
A Glimpse Inside the Closet is a photography-based art exhibition that explores mental health through a visual and symbolic artistic expression. Through this project, the artist ENGELDAHL aims to contribute to greater openness, reflection, and reduced stigma surrounding mental health.
The exhibition consists of a series of photographic artworks presented on clothing hangers, with the wardrobe serving as a metaphor for the human inner life — a space where experiences, emotions, and mental states can be hidden, sorted, and kept separate, but which also contains what we choose to reveal.
The series explores themes such as anxiety, depression, trauma, identity, vulnerability, and personal growth. Each artwork seeks to provide the audience with a visual entry point into experiences that can often be difficult to express in words. Symbolism, contrasts, and strong visual elements are used to give form to different emotional landscapes. All styling, makeup, set design, photography, and image processing have been created by the artist ENGELDAHL.
The project was developed in close dialogue with people with lived experience of mental health challenges. Most of the models are affiliated with Amalie Skrams Hus in Bergen, and the photographs were taken on the premises. The participants have contributed actively to the project's artistic expression and execution, helping to strengthen its authenticity and relevance.
Great emphasis has been placed on privacy and the well-being of the participants. Through styling, makeup, and artistic treatment, the models have largely been anonymised so that no one can be identified without their consent. The themes and expressions portrayed in the photographs do not necessarily represent the individual models' own experiences.
Bergen Recovery School will participate in the event with an information stand and engage with visitors about local mental health and recovery services. This collaboration connects the art exhibition with concrete resources available in Bergen and gives visitors an opportunity for further reflection and conversation about mental health.
