Engeldahl: Art Beyond the Lens
Norwegian conceptual photography and visual art.
Meet Engeldahl's vision
My photographic work exists within a surreal and carefully staged visual landscape, where people are placed in unexpected situations and subtle visual disruptions shape the narrative. Through the use of styling, props, makeup, and body paint, I construct images that emphasize atmosphere, symbolism, and psychological tension. The photographs are not intended to document reality, but to function as visual narratives that invite interpretation, emotional engagement, and unease.
In post-production, I work deliberately and selectively with Photoshop, using light, contrast, and color as compositional tools rather than corrective ones. Editing becomes a continuation of the image-making process, guiding the viewer’s attention and reinforcing the emotional and conceptual core of the photograph, while allowing traces of the human and imperfect to remain present.
Across my photographic work, I explore themes of identity, the body, and psychological states—often situated at the intersection of beauty and discomfort. I am drawn to images that resist immediate resolution, encouraging the viewer to linger and reflect rather than consume them quickly.
Alongside my photographic practice, I also work with ceramic sculpture. This sculptural work functions as a quieter extension of the same concerns, translating questions of body, fragility, and material presence into a tactile, physical form.
